Ancient Forms: Selected Works From An Unexpected Reunion

Ancient Forms is a review of approximately one year of painting (late 2023 - late 2024). The works selected here are not representative of all the paintings I’ve made over the course of that year, nor the varying styles and materials, but instead are chosen based on a subtle resonance I perceive between each one. 

This show is significant to me as it is an opportunity to pause, step back, and reflect on a year of surprising creativity. I spent the two decades prior to creating these paintings deeply involved in the act of music making and the pursuit of a professional career in that art form. Following a health scare in late 2023, and a subsequent reordering of my personal priorities, I returned to the act of visual mark making (my childhood and adolescent passion) primarily as a means to restore my own mental and physical health. What actually emerged from that small decision has been a robust painting practice full of renewed appreciation for the visual field and an ongoing body of work that reflects that. Along with those changes, I’ve found myself getting to know the community of artists and art lovers here in the Hudson Valley, as well as its abundance of art centers and museums.

The title of this show, I hope, speaks of my gratitude and fondness for this reunion (this going back) between myself and this long lost childhood language of mark making.
